After a long day at school and work, I was shocked to come home to all my girlfriends crowded in my living room shouting "Happy 18th!" I'd already been surprised enough earlier with balloons and a trashed car from my family, but now my friends wheeled me right back out the door and lugged me to Phoenix for a fantastic night.
I highly recommend the Scottdale Asian restaurant Flo's. You can't have a party without food, and since it was happy hour all the appetizers were 1/2 off. Forget entrees! We ordered plate after plate of just about every appetizer on the menu.
Afterwards, we cranked up the radio and headed to downtown Phoenix. The Plaza is absolutely calm and lovely with it's street jazz players and twinkling lights and modern architecture-- a stark comparison to the wild side of First Friday Phoenix just a few blocks away. When we walked up to the blocked-off street, all normal melted away and we entered the college-hipster world of art and funk. In this run-down corner of town where the crowd was so thick we had to hold hands to not lose each other, vendors sold freshly-made spray paintings, open houses displayed blown glass and odd carvings, people dressed like animals, and some man asked us if we had a rolling stick {comical, since most of us girls had never heard of a rolling stick. nor had we ever smelled pot, but by the end of the night we all knew what it smelt like}. The trolley and all art centers were also free, so we met up with some of our guys friends and hopped aboard to visit the Phoenix Art Museum. As someone going into design, I was absolutely mesmerized by the weird and beautiful of the museum and my favorite? Oh boy! Must you visit "You Who Are About to Be Obliterated by a Swarm of Fireflies" {which I've heard is even cooler if you're listening to a song like Svefn G Englar}
