The litter didn't go so well. The first one born was born dead. It was deformed, like the mom had had a miscarriage with it. The second one- a girl that goes by Ms. Pink- was born hours later. She was fine, though, and we were so excited to see her when we got home from school (She was born while we were at school; see http://luvwriting.blogspot.com/ for more details.). Mom was gone, since she had taken the mother to the vet. Finally she got home. I ran outside anxiously, but she made me go back in. There was two pups born alive. The poor other little baby boy was dead. My mom tried everything, but he was gone. Whether he was born dead or had become cold we don't know. After that, Traveler (the mother) had another dead one. It was a little girl, and we probably would have called her Ms. Purple. My mom again tried and tried and tried, but the baby was dead.
We co-own Traveler, and after a bit her other owners came over. After a while Traveler started having contractions again. Finally the puppy was born. It was a boy. My mom thought he was dead, and started rubbing him with the cloth to warm him immediately. And then he took a breath.
Although we should have had seven, we were grateful for the two boys and two girls. But we didn't think of having death after delivery. On Sunday, my mom told me that Traveler layed on Ms. Pink. She was trying to get her warm, but she was so exausted she didn't realize she was actually on top. Ms. Pink sufficated.
Rachel and I cried when we heard of the death 0f a fourth puppy. But we know we are so lucky to have our family safe and strong. I think of the Larsens and how their two-year-old Kamber drowned over the summer, and of the family whose eight-month-old choked on an apple and died. My mom could have been killed in an accident the night Ms. Pink died because of some crazy driver who wasn't paying attension. And at least those puppies can go to heaven.
