Stein am Rhein is a town just across the border in Switzerland along the River Rhine. And though there are many similarities among these quaint towns, Stein am Rhein is special in its abundance of intricate murals adorning the facade of many Altstadt buildings. A Swiss woman who guided us through a small cultural museum admitted she was surprised that Americans had found their way to Stein am Rhein, but alas, we have discovered the gems.
One thing that impressed Dallin was the feeling of security in the town. Children played in the schoolyard, seemingly unsupervised and with no fence.
After stopping by a chocolatier for some Swiss treats, we drove up the mount to an old fortress. The grounds were closed, but we still enjoyed a stroll amongst trees and cows while Dallin contemplated the task of defending a medieval city.
In one cold, whirlwind of a day we visited more of Luzern and then explored Zurich and Konstanz before heading to Singen. I went to Switzerland a handfull of times on my mission, but never long enough to figure out Swiss German. But I learned then just as my parents learned now: the Swiss know dang well how to whip up some good chocolate, cheese and bread. Oh my.
The greatest agony of leaving Europe was that giant piece of my heart
left beneath its ancient streets. I knew saying goodbye in August would
be hard, but as my feet once again landed on Old World soil, I had a
feeling that I was doomed to a future of restless wanderlust. No goodbye
COULD be my last, for I loved it too much.
When laced with Christmas lights, nighttime Luzern is a sight to behold. Of course, when I say nighttime I mean like 5:00 because it's dark enough to be 9. We strolled across the ancient bridge, where the city reflected orange across the blue waters, and castles loomed overhead. Finding an affordable dinner was a challenge until we remembered the Christmas market right beneath our balcony-- so a meal of Flammenkuchen, bratwurst and raclette we ate! Our hotel was above the oldest restaurant in Luzern.
