I've noticed lately that I have a pretty dang good memory. Or is it that?
First off, in choir we were doing sight reading. I noticed that we were playing it in a different key because one of the notes was a high E. One of my very favorite songs (which, BTW have I mentioned I played on the piano while singing in a duet with Ben?) is All I Ask of You. The starting note for the female part is an E Flat. Somehow, I know exactly what that very note is without a piano. Thus, knowing it's high, I knew that the "E" in that song was not really an E. Strangely, Mr. Hickman asked if anyone noticed that he didn't play it in the same key. I raised my hand, but was the only one. When asked how I knew, I told that I knew it would be higher. He said that the reason he asked us was because there is a student in is other 8th grade choir who has Perfect Pitch, meaning she could be asked to sing any note there is, and she knows it on the spot. He said that I have what is called Relative Pitch, meaning I know about where a note is. It is something he told me that he and many other really good musicians have. Since then I have tested my skill, and there have been several times when I'll think, "Alright, I think this is what a C is." I'll play it on the piano, and it'll be right- if not, just one note away. I've also noticed more and more how much it bugs me when people don't start a song in the right key (they're just a cappella) because I know what note starts on. Even though I'm without the piano too. Strange.
Also, some friends thought I had photographic memory. Sometimes I wonder if I kind of do. Okay, I can't exactly look at a page for a minute, then shut the book and read the whole page from memory. But often times on tests I am able to figure out answers because I can remember the paper with the notes and picture where a specific piece of information was on that page. I don't know how that helps me, but it does. The biggest thing was during a final exam in Social Studies. We had to choose one of two topics to write an essay on during class with no notes or anything. I literally didn't even think about the essay until the night before, when I stayed up till probably midnight writing my "rough draft." Of course I couldn't use that on the test, but I figured it would prepare me. Well, I wrote it, then kept reviewing it before the test. It was the strangest thing ever. I went to class and took the test, the whole thing was memorized! Even the little details! Now keep in mind, I write a lot. What I memorized was an entire page, the words in tiny font, and in not the biggest amount of time. As I took the test, if there was something I couldn't remember, I would just picture the rough draft paper, and then I would see the words and write them down as if they were in front of me!
Maybe I'm just exaggerating something completely normal. Maybe I'm just getting over-excited about little, meaningless things.
Maybe it's all those fruits and vegetables I'm addicted to.
