With Dallin's foot injury in June and my queasy early pregnancy, we didn't hike much this summer. But with the weather cooling, we have tried to catch up. Beckham can be bribed into the hiking backpack with goldfish crackers, and it's quite funny to listen to him babble from Dallin's back. He'll suddenly realize there are trees everywhere and exclaim, "Tree! Tree! Tree!" as if he can name every one he sees. He also loves to run along the trail, albeit with safe guidance from us on areas that are kid-appropriate. We hiked to Gloria Falls two Sundays in a row, first with Dallin's mom and then with friends. For me, it's made possible by the belly support band. We'll see what strikes first: cold weather or my general immobility!

We took to the Alpine Poppy Fields for the third year in a row, but this time, it was spent chasing Beckham the entire time. From Beckham's POV, why look at flowers when you can sprint, biff it, get back up and keep sprinting?
For July 4, we joined with friends and neighbors for sparklers, food, and an endless display of fireworks shows put on by our fellow Utahns. It the first time Beckham had watched fireworks, and he picked up the word so fast, excitedly shouting "FIREWORKS!" in his little toddler accent all night.

I now have to be exceptionally careful taking Beckham to the butterfly biosphere because he gets a little too excited and isn't very gentle.
Celebrating my good friend Haley at her baby shower
A quick visits from Kaeli and cousin Leroy. Beckham does not like to stop running for anything, pictures included.

For the last part of our visit before returning to Anchorage to fly home, we took a trip to Seward.
Part 1: The Fjords
We booked the five-hour expedition on the water with Kenai Fjords. The cruise took us past glaciers to cliffs brimming with life. We spotted a nest of three eaglets, crowds of puffins, and other birds, and we saw multiple orcas leaping across the ocean's surface. Halfway through the day we stopped for lunch on shore. The beach was made up of smooth, flat stones perfect for skipping, and Beckham giggled when Dallin threw stones while holding him. When the boys left to go fishing for a few days on the peninsula, Rachel and I brought Beckham along for our own adventures. We turned on a podcast and drove past through emerald terrain to the ruins of Independence Mine. Where men once mined for gold now lay shambles of buildings amidst tumbling waterfalls and purple fields of fireweed. Unfortunately, we were only able to view stroller-accessible areas because it was too difficult for me to carry Beckham in his hiking backpack. Nevertheless, what we saw was breathtaking, and Beckham was more than happy to kick his feet up and enjoy the ride.
I pictured this the summer of hikes -- we even got Beckham a hiking backpack to ride on Dallin's back Yzma-and-Kronk style. Unfortunately, Beckham's legs are too skinny to fit comfortably in the backpack, and he's getting quite heavy for his front carrier. We had to find family friendly trails that were shorter and overall less intense. This June we found four beautiful waterside trails, each of which I would do again!
Willow Lake Trail
Not pictured: the furry chirping critters that scurried around the lakeside that Beckham REALLY wanted to touch
After the wedding, we only had a little bit of time to spend with my parents and Sophie before they returned to Arizona. We were graced with a last bit of spring weather and visited the Alpine Poppy Fields, which had just started to bloom. Beckham was enthralled by the big, vibrant flowers! I wore the same dress I wore a year ago when I visited the poppies pregnant -- this time, the walk was substantially easier.
Perhaps nothing has reminded me more of Europe than the Ashton Gardens and the Tulip Festival. With my membership, Beckham and I went to the festival 7 times and never grew tired of the lovely views. We visited by ourselves, with family members, and with friends both new and old, and were sad to see the flowers fade away.
