Day 3. After checking out in Heidelberg, we drove to Mainz to spend a few hours wandering before our check-in time in Oberwesel. The Christmas market in Mainz sat beneath string lights and the grand pink towers of the 1000-year-old Mainz cathedral. We wove our way through the pedestrian shopping streets until we ended at the tiny, quiet Altstadt (Old Town) with its half-timbered houses. Our timing in Mainz was perfect; just as we were getting back to the car, it began to rain. As we drove, many of the views along the Rhine were obscured by snow, rain and fog, yet still we spotted multiple castles along the river and in the mountains.

| One of the many Rhine castles visible from the roadside. Because of the weather and because I was in the middle back seat, I wasn’t able to get pictures of the other castles and sites. |
