Tomorrow, nearly a thousand will embark on a journey that will trace the steps of those who walked before us. Those whose blood and tears paved the path of freedom, whose faith acted as key to unlock the glory of God. Tomorrow we will remember that without the sacrifice of the ones who wanted nothing more than to serve their Maker, we would not be here as we are today.
Trek. We have been preparing for months, doing things from breaking in shoes as we take walks to reading our scriptures five minutes daily. We have prayed earnestly, filling our hearts with the warm peace of the Spirit as we soften ourselves for a new experience. We have hoped till this very last minute to be ready.
I know that nothing we do could possibly rival in greatness to what our pioneer ancestors did. So many had to leave everything they knew in order to reach Zion. While studying, I've found stories of people who faced wind temperatures of seventy below zero, eating no more than two to four ounces of floor a day. One selfless girl swam through almost-fatally cold water seventeen times to help other people cross.
With this in mind, my sincerest desire is to have a humbled heart capable of performing even the slightest of marvelous works that these people did.
